Comme le sc-PDSI et le SPI, le SPEI peut mesurer la gravité de la sécheresse en fonction de son intensité et de sa durée, et peut identifier le début et la fin des épisodes de sécheresse. Le SPEI permet de comparer la gravité de la sécheresse dans le temps et l'espace, puisqu'il peut être calculé sur une large gamme de climats, tout comme le SPI. En outre, Keyantash et Dracup (2002) ont indiqué que les indices de sécheresse doivent être statistiquement robustes et faciles à calculer, et avoir une procédure de calcul claire et compréhensible. Toutes ces exigences sont satisfaites par le SPEI. Toutefois, un avantage crucial de la SPEI par rapport à d'autres indices de sécheresse largement utilisés qui prennent en compte l'effet du TEP sur la gravité de la sécheresse est que ses caractéristiques multi-échelles permettent d'identifier différents types de sécheresse et leurs impacts dans le contexte du réchauffement climatique. &lt;br&gt;</ins></div></td></tr> <tr><td colspan="2">&#160;</td><td class='diff-marker'>+</td><td style="color:black;
